What is Oxytocin?

Oxytocin is a peptide hormone as well as a neuropeptide. When naturally occurring it is produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary gland. It plays essential roles in reproduction, birth, and social bonding.

Oxytocin is released into the bloodstream as a hormonal response to sexual activity as well as during labor. Oxytocin, whether naturally occurring or synthetic, is primarily used to speed up the process of birth. It does this by stimulating uterine contractions.

 

Reproduction

Based on a study done with male rats oxytocin has been surmised as a potential erection inducer. Bursts of oxytocin are released during ejaculation in several species.

 

The Heart

Less commonly known, oxytocin and oxytocin receptors can be found in the hearts of some rodents. Based on these studies, it is surmised that oxytocin plays a role in the development of the heart by promoting cardiomyocyte differentiation.

 

Neuroprotection

Studies on rats have demonstrated that various applications of oxytocin can alleviate impaired learning capabilities that are often caused by restrained stress. It is surmised that the alleviation is caused by improved hippocampal response in BDNF, or brain derived neurotrophic factor. Based on these findings, oxytocin has been  proven to promote normal growth in the hippocampus.
