What is Liraglutide?
Liraglutide, or Victoza, is an anti-diabetic peptide that is often used to treat conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management. This peptide was approved for use in the United States in 2010. Its primary function is to aid in the control of blood glucose. Liraglutide is an acylated glucagon-like peptide 1 agonist. It is a derivative of the human GLP-1-(7-37) which is a less common form of GLP-1.
It primarily works by reducing meal related hyperglycemia in its patients. It does so for 24 hours after its first administration. Liraglutide works by increasing insulin secretion only and delaying gastric emptying.
In patients that experience high cardiovascular risk, liraglutide shows an affinity to reduce the risk of death due to cardiovascular complications as well as nonfatal myocardial infarction or nonfatal stroke.
