Infertility and Its Causes
The top three causes of infertility in women include conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids and thyroid disease. For those with endometriosis, it is often characterized as having the presence of tissue that resembles endometrium outside of the uterus. It can cause an inflammatory response by the body which can lead to the formation of scar tissue within the pelvis among other parts of the body. Hormone medications are often used as a way to alleviate or treat endometriosis.
Uterine fibroids are often non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can develop during the fertile years of a woman’s life. Things such as obesity, family history of fibroids, and early onset puberty can sometimes be the cause of uterine fibroids. Various hormonal treatments as well as sex hormone suppression are commonly used to treat uterine fibroids.
Thyroid disease is described as any dysfunction relating to the butterfly shaped gland at the base of the neck (i.e.; your thyroid). It encompasses conditions such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Much like the previous two conditions, it is treated with corresponding medications based on which thyroid disease you are dealing with.
As for men, infertility is often caused by low sperm count or low testosterone.
Low sperm count can be caused by a plethora of things that range from simple fixes to more outstanding reasons for low counts. Some of the lesser evils that can be easily absolved include illicit drug use, smoking, and drinking alcohol. Things that may require a bit more work include obesity, depression or stress, and having certain past or present infections.
Low testosterone has similar possible causes ranging from medical side effects from treatments such as chemotherapy to things such as low thyroid function and obesity. Thyroid medications can assist with various medications where obesity can be staunched with the assistance of corrected diet and exercise programs.
What is Gonadorelin?
Gonadorelin is considered a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist. A gonadotropin releasing hormone against, GnRH for short, is a type of medication used to affect gonadotropins and sex hormones. In the case of gonadorelin, it is commonly used as a fertility medication as well as to treat amenorrhea and hypogonadism.
As mentioned above, gonadorelin is also used as an agent to assess pituitary gland function. Unlike other GnRH analogues, gonadorelin is not used to suppress hormone production. It has been around since the late 70s when it was sold under the brand name Factrel. And now has several brand names associated with it.
Benefits & Side Effects of Gonadorelin
Benefits of gonadorelin include the induction of ovulation in women who do not have regular ovulation cycles or menstrual periods. These irregularities typically are caused by the hypothalamus not releasing enough GnRH. It is also used as a tester for how well the hypothalamus and pituitary glands are functioning as well.
Often for men, gonadorelin is typically prescribed as a treatment for men who do not want to experience further gradual testicular shrinkage or testicular functional capacity while on TRT.
Gonadorelin has the ability to reverse testicular atrophy and possibly increase seminal volume.
- Induced ovulation
- Helps to check hypothalamus & pituitary functioning
- Possible reversal of testicular atrophy
- Possible increase in seminal fluid
Common side effects of gonadorelin use include things such as headaches and flushing, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dizziness or lightheadedness, and possible reactions at the injection site.
Dosing with Gonadorelin
The most common dosage of gonadorelin for men and women is 100mcg per dose. For women that can accurately identify the phases of their menstrual cycle, gonadorelin should be taken in the early part of the follicular stage. This is during day 1 and 7 of your cycle and ensures best results.
For men looking to pair gonadorelin with TRT, doses will vary slightly between patients with the most common dose being 100mcg that would be taken 2 to 3 times per week.
