Epitalon Effects on Spontaneous Carcinogenesis: Female C3H/He Mice Model

The study examined the potential preventive effect of the synthetic pineal peptide Epitalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) on spontaneous tumorigenesis in mice. One-year-old female C3H/He mice were maintained under standard conditions for 6.5 months, during which Epitalon was injected 5 times a week. Long-term exposure to Epitalon at small doses did not exhibit any toxic effects.

Treatment with Epitalon notably decreased the number of tumor-bearing mice with malignant tumors and effectively prevented the development of metastases. Predominant spontaneous tumors were found in the reproductive organs, particularly mammary glands and ovaries. The mammary gland tumors comprised various variants of invasive ductal carcinomas, while granulosa-cell tumors were found in the ovaries. Tumors in other organs were less common and typically benign in nature. [2]

In the control group, metastases were detected in 3 out of 9 tumor-bearing mice, all originating from tumors of the reproductive organs. Conversely, Epitalon treatment significantly slowed down metastatic development from spontaneous tumors, with no metastases found in the experimental mice. These findings highlight the antimetastatic effect of Epitalon, underscoring its oncostatic properties.

Treatment on Rats for Eye Retina Condition in Retinitis Pigmentosa

The study delved into the effects of tetrapeptide Epitalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) on congenital pigmented degeneration of the retina. Through experimentation on Campbell rats, researchers found that the application of Epitalon intensified both the bioelectric and functional activity of the retina, primarily by preserving its morphological structure. This suggests that Epitalon may play a significant role in maintaining retinal health and functionality.

Moreover, clinical trials involving patients with degenerative retinal lesions revealed promising results with Epitalon therapy, showing a positive clinical effect in 90% of cases. This highlights the potential therapeutic value of Epitalon in treating retinal degenerative disorders in humans. [3]

Further analysis of the effects of Epitalon suggests its involvement in common transcription mechanisms shared by the epiphysis (pineal gland) and the retina. This finding underscores the complex interplay between Epitalon and key molecular pathways that regulate cellular function and homeostasis in both the pineal gland and the retina. [3]

Overall, the study sheds light on the potential therapeutic benefits of Epitalon in preserving retinal health and function, offering insights into its mechanisms of action and its broader implications for treating retinal degenerative conditions.
