The Brain & Choline

Choline is an essential nutrient within the human body and is often classified as a nutrient with an amino acid-like metabolism. While humans and other animals create choline naturally within the body. This natural occurrence is often insufficient. But why does it matter that we maintain our choline levels?

It is important because choline is required to produce acetylcholine which is a neurotransmitter. It also helps in the production of S-adenosylmethionine which is a universal methyl donor within our bodies. Upon methylation, S-adenosylmethionine is converted into homocysteine.

So, what happens when there is a large enough deficiency of choline in the body? A drastic decrease in choline within the human body can manifest itself as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. It is also capable of damaging muscle tissue as well if not properly treated.

Now, where there is a deficiency probability, there is also an over consumption of choline that can occur. When choline is high in the body, this can result in low blood pressure, sweating, diarrhea, and a fish-like body odor. The odor is due to trimethylamine that is formed in the metabolism. Therefore, monitoring and keeping your choline levels stable is your best bet.

What is Centrophenoxine?

Centrophenoxine, known by its brand name as meclofenoxate, is a nootropic with the ability to affect choline levels. It works by mimicking the actions of acetylcholine and butyrylcholine which are both neurotransmitters.

Something to note is that acetylcholine is a common occurrence naturally within the body. Whereas, butyrylcholine is a synthetic version. In any case, both work to activate muscles within the body. .

An example of this would be when you are lifting weights. Your mind is sending messages out on its “network” of neurons to your legs, arms, and other muscles needed to lift the intended weight. It’s telling your hands how to perform and so on.

Centrophenoxine Study on Learning & Memory Enhancement

Researchers conducted a study on older mice in an effort to discern whether or not centrophenoxine would be an effective treatment for learning and memory enhancement. Female mice between the ages of 11 and 12 months were treated for a three month span with centrophenoxine.

The memory and learning aspects were tested by using a T-maze. By the end of the study, it was surmised that the treated mice were able to complete the maze more efficiently than those untreated.

Centrophenoxine & Parkinson’s Disease

Rotenone is a chemical capable of reproducing behavioral features of Parkinson’s disease in rats. In preparation for one study involving the effectiveness of centrophenoxine, rats were administered rotenone subcutaneously for 35 days. By doing so, the rats showed symptoms similar to Parkinson’s in humans. Rats that were administered centrophenoxine in addition to the rotenone, were able to counteract the effects of the rotenone and therefore reduce symptoms associated with Parkinson’s.

Benefits & Side Effects

So, centrophenoxine plays a role with our neurotransmitters. What does that mean for us? As you take centrophenoxine you may start to notice enhancements in memory and overall cognition. Something else you may notice is that your critical thinking skills are improving as well. Other less known benefits that are equally as important include a boost in your energy levels as well as better moods.

The downside to any compound is the possibility of side effects. However, in most cases with centrophenoxine, side effects are minimal and happen more when an individual overdoses on the compound. What are these side effects to look out for? Insomnia or in some cases restlessness, nausea, dizziness, muscle tremors, or headache. If any of these symptoms occur, it would be wise to reduce your dose.

Dosing Centrophenoxine

The goal with nootropics of any kind, let alone centrophenoxine is to improve overall mental capacities. Be that improved memory, better focus or just better critical thinking skills. However, trying out the highest dose recommended is not the best option when starting with these substances. In reality, you’ll want to start with a smaller dose and work up to larger doses as needed.

That being said, when starting out with centrophenoxine, the dose that is recommended is 250mg per day or 125mg twice per day. Before increasing this amount, be sure to note any changes you’re experiencing to see if it is absolutely necessary.
