Studies on Isotretinoin

Doses of Isotretinoin at 0.1mg/kg, 0.5mg/kg, and 1.0mg/kg were taken daily by the patients to test side effects and the effectiveness of each treatment. Between the three, a high response rate with no major differences between doses. The most pivotal information is that those that received the 0.5mg/kg dose and 1.0mg/kg dose did not need to retreat. However, some of those with the 0.1mg/kg dose did need to retreat after the initial treatments concluded.
Oral Lichen Planus
Oral Lichen Planus is an inflammatory condition that effects the mucous membrane of the inside of your mouth. It results in white patches, red tissue that’s swollen, and open sores. All of which can be very uncomfortable and painful.
However, in a double-blind study, patients with this condition had Isotretinoin gel twice a day as a treatment option. In the treatment ten of the twenty patients applied 0.1% Isotretinoin gel for two months with the others as a placebo group. Those involved in the initial treatments saw a significant improvement in their condition.
Side Effects of Isotretinoin
Several side effects exist and should be monitored while using Isotretinoin. For women, this substance should not be taken if planning to become pregnant or if you are pregnant. This is do to the fact that it can cause multiple issues with the embryo forming. In many instances where a woman becomes pregnant while using this substance, it is a common recommendation to terminate the pregnancy.
In some instances, infections can occur, but this is very rare. Those that take this substance may also experience symptoms such as depression, mood swings, and headaches. Again, these symptoms are also mild in nature and tend to dissipate over time. The most common symptoms involved with taking Isotretinoin relate to the eyes and blood. It can potentially increase the red blood cell sedimentation rate and cause eye irritation or dryness.
