What is HCG?

HCG, also known as human chorionic gonadotropin, is a hormone that is most produced by a placenta after the implantation stage of pregnancy. As its synthetic forms it is known as Pregnyl and Novarel. It is what is considered a glycoprotein that consists of 237 amino acids. A glycoprotein is a class of proteins that has a carbohydrate group that attaches to polypeptide chains.

The main function of HCG is the maintenance of corpus luteum, which is responsible for producing progesterone in early pregnancy. However, it has been shown to aid in other various areas of health including weight loss. In terms of weight loss, HCG is not meant to aid the weight loss itself but instead to create less muscle wasting and strengthen the metabolism over time.

Positives of HCG for Women

HCG has been proven to encourage the release of the egg in women who may be experiencing issues with getting pregnant. It is a fertility drug because of its strong abilities to aid fertility in both men and women. However, it should be noted that if a woman becomes pregnant taking HCG is not recommended as it can cause birth defects during pregnancy. So, if you become pregnant while using HCG, notify your doctor immediately.

What Can HCG Do for Men?

For men there are multitude of positives. For those that are suffering from infertility issues, HCG has been proven to increase sperm production and testosterone in men and has also been known to help those whose testes have not descended. Testosterone has been shown to increase penis and testes size. Because HCG has these abilities, it is not uncommon for those that take anabolic steroids to use it to recover from the nasty side effects of steroids once they finish a cycle.

The HCG Diet

The HCG diet is a diet consisting of a low calorie count, typically about 500 calories a day. It is a low fat and low calorie diet. Low calorie count paired with HCG which has been known to suppress hunger and maintain muscle mass in some. Like any low calorie diet, you can expect to lose weight quickly. However, because of the abilities of HCG you won’t feel weak or tired so to the lack of calorie intake.

Phases of the HCG Diet

This diet has three phases, the first phase is termed the loading phase. While in this phase, you begin taking HCG and you eat foods that are high in fats and high in calories. This is the phase that covers the span of two days. Once this phase is complete you move into the second phase of the HCG diet.

The second stage of the HCG diet lasts for about three to six weeks. This is where most of the weight loss takes place and is thus deemed the weight loss phase. Throughout the three to six weeks you continue the use of HCG; however, unlike the first couple of days you do not eat bulk calories. In contrast, you reduce your calorie intake to 500 calories per day.

After the three to six week phase of eating 500 calories and maintaining this low calorie diet, you then move into the maintenance phase. This is the phase of the diet where you stop taking HCG. Keep in mind, you haven’t been eating many calories over the past three to six weeks so when you start this phase, you’ll want to gradually increase the number of calories you are consuming. The key to this phase is to avoid sugars and starches while you’re increasing the calories you consume. This phase of the diet consists of a three week span.

The biggest key to success depends on you. For a person who is looking for a small change in weight loss, you may only need three weeks for the second phase. However, for those seeking a significant amount of weight loss it may benefit to use the full six weeks of the weight loss phase.

Some other things to note is that while in the weight loss phase of the HCG diet, you are eating similarly to as if you were using an intermittent fasting regimen.

There are only two meals per day which is, in practice, lunch and dinner. Both of which should consist of a lean protein, vegetables, fruit, and a piece of bread. Some of the biggest things to avoid include butter, sugars, and oils. Water is a must on this diet and is the drink of choice.
